A ladder discount for FMCG distributors lets you pass the company's scheme, your trade discount and the cash discount to the retailer as three separate steps on one bill line, while Tally records the single percentage they compound to. In Takkada, the salesman types the steps on a sales invoice or sales order from his phone, for example 8% scheme, 2% trade and 1% cash. The app applies them one after the other and rounds the total to two decimals: 10.74%. On 120 cases at ₹250 before GST, that is a taxable value of ₹26,778.00. The bill shows "8% + 2% + 1% · total 10.74%" on the line, and the PDF prints a column for each step under the names you chose, such as Trade and Cash. Tally receives 10.74 in the item line's discount field. Your retailer can check every step against the scheme letter, and your books carry the same amount.
The FMCG distributor's month
You supply 300 to 400 kirana and general stores across a dozen beats, on 7 to 15 days of credit. Each month the company sends a scheme circular: so many percent off a pack size, a trade discount on top for stockists, and a cash discount for retailers who pay on delivery. The salesman is expected to apply all three, on the spot, at the counter.
He does it on a calculator if he remembers the order, or rounds it off in his head. The office then retypes one compounded number into Tally. When the retailer's own sum does not match, he holds the payment until someone explains the bill.
How the steps sit on the bill
The owner names the second and third steps once, in Settings, Invoices, Discount step names. Up to 16 characters each, so "Trade" and "Cash" fit, or "Stockist" and "CD". The first step is the line's usual Discount %.
On the invoice, the salesman adds the item and taps its discount. The Item Discount sheet shows Discount % and then your two named boxes. He types 8, 2 and 1, and the sheet shows the price after each step: 250.00 → 230.00 → 225.40 → 223.15, total 10.74%.
The ₹30,000 line
120 cases of detergent at ₹250 each, rate before GST, 18% GST.
- Gross: ₹30,000.00
- Total discount: 10.74%, so ₹3,222.00 off
- Taxable value: ₹26,778.00
- CGST ₹2,410.02 and SGST ₹2,410.02
- Line total: ₹31,598.04
A calculator taking 8%, 2% and 1% off ₹30,000 in turn ends at ₹26,777.52. The bill is 48 paise higher because the figure Takkada sends to Tally is rounded to two decimals, and the app works the amount from that same 10.74%. Both sides agree with what Tally will show.
What Tally and the retailer each see
The retailer's PDF has Disc. 8%, Trade 2%, Cash 1% and Total Disc. 10.74% on that line. A line on the same bill without a ladder leaves those cells blank.
Tally gets the invoice as a sales voucher with your rate and 10.74 in the item's discount field. The scheme, trade and cash names stay in Takkada, where your bill shows them.
If you book orders first, the steps stay on the sales order and carry into the invoice made from it.
Where the FMCG Billing Module fits
If your rate for an item is worked from the printed MRP and a retailer margin, that is Takkada's FMCG Billing Module, described in FMCG billing software for Tally. It is a separate add-on, and a business holds one or the other. The ladder suits distributors whose company quotes discounts as steps off a list rate.
The whole method, with the ₹10,000 example, is in how the ladder discount works on a Tally invoice. The module page is ladder discount in Tally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can the salesman change the scheme percentage on the bill?
A: Yes, by default. If you want the rate and the first discount fixed, the owner can turn on "Lock rate and first discount for staff" and set each item's first discount; staff then change only the second and third steps.
Q: Will Tally show the scheme and cash discount separately?
A: No. Tally gets one percentage per item line, the rounded total. The separate steps print on the invoice PDF.
Q: Why is my calculator 48 paise off the bill?
A: The calculator keeps every decimal. The bill works the amount from the total rounded to two decimals, the same figure Takkada sends to Tally.
