Ladder Discount for Auto Parts Dealers with List-Price Discounts

Ladder Discount for Auto Parts Dealers with List-Price Discounts

A ladder discount for auto parts dealers lets you bill a part at its list price and show the discounts off it as steps, for example 25% dealer discount and then 5% extra for a garage that buys in bulk, while Tally records the single percentage they compound to. In Takkada, you type the steps on a sales invoice or sales order line from the phone. The app applies them one after the other and rounds the total to two decimals: 28.75%. Ten clutch plates at a list price of ₹1,800 before GST make ₹18,000, and after both steps the taxable value is ₹12,825.00. The line reads "25% + 5% · total 28.75%". The PDF keeps the list rate in the Rate column, Disc. for the dealer discount, a column for your named step and Total Disc. Tally receives 28.75 in the item line's discount field. The garage sees the list price he can check in the catalogue and every discount he was given.

An auto parts counter's day

You stock a few thousand part numbers across two-wheeler and four-wheeler brands, and you sell to 100 to 200 garages, mechanics and smaller retailers, many on 15 to 30 days of credit. Every part has a printed list price, and the business runs on discounts off that list: a standard dealer discount, an extra percentage for a garage that buys in volume, and sometimes a brand's monthly scheme.

The mechanic knows the list price of a clutch plate better than your counter boy does. When his bill shows a net rate with no list price and no discount, he pulls out the catalogue and does the sum himself. A bill that shows the list and the steps saves that argument.

Setting up the steps

The owner names the second and third steps in Settings, Invoices, Discount step names, up to 16 characters each. A parts counter might use "Garage" and "Scheme". The first step is the line's usual Discount %, printed as Disc.

On the bill, enter the part at its list rate, tap its discount, and type 25 in Discount % and 5 in Garage. The Item Discount sheet shows the price after each step, 1800.00 → 1350.00 → 1282.50, total 28.75%.

The ₹18,000 line

Ten clutch plates at a list price of ₹1,800, rate before GST, 18% GST.

  • Gross: ₹18,000.00
  • Total discount: 28.75%, so ₹5,175.00 off
  • Taxable value: ₹12,825.00
  • CGST ₹1,154.25 and SGST ₹1,154.25
  • Line total: ₹15,133.50

Both steps come off before GST, and GST is worked on what remains.

Many parts, many ladders

A garage's bill can run to twenty lines across three brands. Each line carries its own steps, so a filter can be 20% + 5% while a bearing from another brand is 30% flat. On the PDF, the Garage column prints because some line uses it, and lines without that step leave the cell blank.

If the garage's order was booked first as a sales order, its steps carry into the invoice made from it, including through a delivery challan. Editing a saved invoice reopens every line with its steps. A wrong part sent back goes on a credit note with a plain discount per line.

Holding the dealer discount at your rate

If your dealer discount is fixed and only the extra step is negotiable, the owner can set each item's first discount in Settings, Invoices, First discount by item, and turn on "Lock rate and first discount for staff". For non-owner logins on sales invoices, orders and quotations, the Rate box and Discount % then show read-only, the item's first discount fills new lines, and staff can change only the named steps. The owner's own login is not covered by the lock.

What reaches Tally

The invoice syncs to Tally as a sales voucher with the list rate and 28.75 in the item line's discount field. The step names stay in Takkada and on the PDF your garage receives. The rounding behind each total is in how the ladder discount works on a Tally invoice. The module page is ladder discount in Tally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the bill show the list price?

A: Yes. The rate on the line stays the rate you billed at, so if you bill at list, the list price shows in the Rate column and the steps show beside it.

Q: Will Tally show the dealer discount and the garage discount separately?

A: No. Tally gets one percentage per item line, 28.75 here, and the amount it shows matches the bill.

Q: Can each part on one bill carry a different ladder?

A: Yes. Steps are typed per line, so every part can carry its own brand's discounts.
